Participants will learn how to use available UNIX-based scripts to automate access to free weather data from NOAA/NWS databases, as well as examples of how such data can be translated into weather-based farm management decisions by automated analysis and export of presentation graphics through Microsoft Excel.
This webinar will review newly created computer scripts that run automatically within a UNIX shell to retrieve hourly observed and forecast weather variables such as temperature, precipitation, relative humidity, solar radiation, evapotranspiration, and others from publically accessible no-charge NOAA/NWS databases. The use of automated weather data delivery into Microsoft Excel by VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) script to create farm management decision support charts and tables will also be demonstrated.
This webinar is sponsored by the USDA Northeast Climate Hub, which builds on capacity within USDA to deliver science-based knowledge and practical information to farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C.
