Effects of biochar application on tree seedling growth and interactions with water and nutrient availability during early establishment have not been widely studied. Biochar may modify soil water and nutrient availability to tree seedlings, but related effects on seedling survival and growth are not clear as past studies have shown positive, negative, and neutral responses. Dr. Slesak has conducted several studies to evaluate potential effects of biochar application on growth of planted conifer seedlings as well as the effects of water and nutrient availability on seedling performance using growth as an indicator or response.

This month's speaker was Dr. Robert A. Slesak

Dr. Slesak is a Research Forester and Team Leader at the Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station based in Olympia WA. He holds a Bachelor of Sciences Forest Resources management degree from State University of NY, College of Environmental Science and Forestry (2002), his MS in Forest Ecosystem Science, soil-plant nutrition diagnostics, from same university (2004) and a PhD in Forest Soils from Oregon State University (2009). Dr. Slesak’s research focuses on the effects of forest management and other ecosystem stressors on stand development and soil functions, and the development of mitigative actions or adaptive systems to minimize detrimental effects. Most of his research is conducted using experimental manipulation to directly quantify ecosystem responses. He has more than 70 publications in different topics related to impacts of stressors as a result of forest management in forest ecosystems.
