The US Forest Service in partnership with the US Biochar Initiative and the Southern Regional Extension Forestry will be presenting its next monthly Biochar Webinar titled: "Biochar production in the field opportunities and challenges" on June 16, 2022 from 11am to 12pm Eastern time.

This month's speaker is Darren McAvoy. Darren holds a Bachelor of Science from Colorado State University, and a Master of Science Degree from Utah State University (USU) in communication. He is Extension Assistant Professor of Forestry, Utah State University.

Prior to joining USU Forestry Extension, Darren was a consulting forester in Sandpoint, Idaho for seven years. He was also a prescribed fire Ignition Boss. Darren is a former Flathead Hotshot firefighter and veteran of the 1988 Yellowstone fires.

He started with USU Extension in 1999 as he was completing his master's thesis, in which he produced and directed The Missing Fires video, which is about wildland fire use and ecology in the United States. The production and distribution of the video has been supported by The National Park Service, the Florida Division of Forestry, USU Extension, and others. The Missing Fires has won national awards from the Salt Lake Olympic Organizing Committee and the Association of Natural Resource Extension Professionals.

His professional accomplishments are many and all of them important. He has more than 20 years Extension experience in Utah. He developed big box biochar kilns. He has many publications, Oral Presentations, participation in Workshops and conferences, and has published 456 Online Videos many of them related to biochar, forest operations, and best management practices. He conducts research on biochar, water conservation, wildland fire and forest restoration.

He is Fellow of the Society of American Foresters; Member of the Association of Natural Resource Extension Professionals; Member and Past Chair Elect, Western Coordinating Committee of Extension Foresters, and Member of the National Association of County Agents.
