To conceptually think through designing a wetland mitigation or restoration project using targeted readings and summary data from Riparia’s Reference Wetlands Database.
Despite 25 years of calls for improving wetlands mitigation and restoration practices, advancements have been scarce, and progress slow – we must do better! Using data from natural reference wetlands for an appropriate wetland type and region is essential for practitioners who want to enhance project designs and measure performance over time. By designing mitigation or restoration sites with characteristics derived from reference wetlands of relevant hydrogeomorphic subclasses, practitioners are more likely to construct a project that will at least be on a performance trajectory to replace the ecosystem services of natural systems. This webinar is a distillation of materials from three workshops delivered by Rob Brooks (Penn State) and Regina Poeske (USEPA-3) to wetland practitioners in 2014. Brooks and webinar participants will briefly review planning concepts (i.e., wetland classification, site selection, hydrology, soils, vegetation, morphometry, and monitoring), and then demonstrate existing web-based tools that assist practitioners in designing and measuring performance of wetland projects. Closer to the webinar, participants will be directed on where to acquire pre-webinar handouts, readings, and links to web-based tools, including specific instructions on how to explore and apply these tools.
