Learn about the science, methods, and environmental issues associated with manure composting during this webinar.
The objective of this training is to provide an introductory overview of manure composting and introduce basic information sheets available to conservation planners. Composting is defined and composting requirements, reasons to compost, and materials that can be composted with manure are identified. The biology of composting segment describes the basic composting process, the microorganisms involved, the temperature curve, and includes a discussion of inoculants and starters. Composting methods discussed include static piles, turned windrows, composting bins, forced air, towers, rotating drums, bedded packs, and hoop structures. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and pathogens that can escape in runoff or leaching, and odors, ammonia, methane, and particulates that can escape through air emissions are discussed as environmental issues associated with composting. The session concludes with planning considerations and common uses of compost.
