The June edition of the NRCS Conservation Outcomes Webinar Series features a deep dive into science-based conservation strategies for the lesser prairie-chicken, a species emblematic of the Southern High Plains and the intact rangelands it depends on.

This webinar showcases research led by Kansas State University, in partnership with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP). The session presents results from multiple studies examining the impact of land management practices on lesser prairie-chicken populations to support both species’ conservation and the sustainability of working rangelands. Participants will hear from Dr. David Haukos, Associate Professor at Kansas State University and leader of the Kansas Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit. Dr. Haukos will share findings from over a decade of field research on prairie-chicken ecology, habitat use, and the effects of grazing, fire, and other conservation practices. The session is moderated by Charlie Rewa, CEAP Wildlife Component Leader, and introduced by Dan Malarkey, NRCS Resource Assessment Branch Leader, and Elizabeth Creech, NRCS Natural Resources Communication Specialist.
