Explore contemporary problems and solutions at road-stream crossings and how they relate to aquatic organism passage (AOP), conservation biology, stream geomorphology, and habitat quality.

Roads and streams intersect at thousands of locations across the United States. In recent years, the effects of these crossings on the ecology of aquatic species and river systems has received additional attention as new design methods and tools have been developed that promote better passage conditions and result in stable, longer-lasting structures. Viewers of this webinar will be exposed to a number of contemporary themes in passage technology, with a special emphasis on road-stream crossings that preserve stream mechanics and ecology. Topics covered include a discussion of the magnitude and extent of road-stream crossings across the US and East Region States, insight into the biological and geomorphic implications of road-stream crossings, suggestions and examples of “how to read a site” during initial reconnaissance, and the importance of placing road-stream crossings within a watershed context. Applied science guidance is offered in the form of reviews of barrier assessment and identification methods (including an overview of culvert terminology and hydraulics), a description and presentation of coarse filters for assessing passage at road-stream crossings, and a review of recent online references for site survey and design methods for low-water and culvert crossings. Although not exhaustive, this webinar provides a relatively complete overview of the issues and technology presently available to assess and address aquatic organism passage at road-stream crossings.

This webinar is sponsored by the USDA NRCS East National Technology Support Center.
