Participants will learn about an opportunity to restore ecosystem function on agricultural working lands in the Northern Great Plains through the planting of fall cereals which provide safe nesting areas for birds and agronomic benefits to producers.

Curlew nest in winter wheat

Loss and fragmentation of native grassland in the Northern Great Plains has resulted in population declines for many species of grassland nesting birds. While the value of waste grain to waterfowl is well known, cropland typically has been viewed as a negative influence on breeding ducks and other birds because it replaces natural nesting habitat, and may directly or indirectly reduce survival of nests. Winter wheat, which is planted in the fall and harvested the following year, provides good nesting cover through the waterfowl breeding season and is relatively free from mechanical disturbances that can destroy nests. Research conducted in the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) has shown that ducks and other bird species readily nest in winter wheat and nest survival tends to be relatively high. This webinar will discuss the biological and agronomic benefits of winter wheat as well as barriers to winter wheat expansion in regions where spring wheat is the norm. Overcoming barriers to winter wheat adoption will be discussed in the context of Ducks Unlimited’s international Winter Wheat Initiative in the PPR.

This webinar is sponsored by the USDA NRCS National Wildlife Team located at the Central National Technology Support Center.
