Participants will learn about a science-based approach to broad-scale conservation planning in the face of competing land uses, such as energy development.
The footprint for U.S. energy development is increasing and projected to impact an additional 250,000+ sq km including areas important to fish-wildlife. Development by Design is a science-based process to identify, incorporate, and implement priority conservation actions across a region or site based on potential impacts and goals for species and habitat. The approach outlined by the presenters differs from the “old way of doing business” by being collaborative, strategic, science-driven, and planning intense. Management actions are based on predicted population benefits and adapted based research and monitoring. Examples are provided for the siting of oil and gas and wind energy projects to minimize impacts on Greater Sage-grouse and other sensitive wildlife.
This webinar is sponsored by the USDA NRCS National Wildlife Team located at the Central National Technology Support Center.
