The hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), Adelges tsugae, is a small, aphid-like insect with a white cottony appearance that originates from parts of Asia. Since its arrival in the eastern U.S. in the 1950's, it has become a destructive pest responsible for the death of millions of hemlock trees. The loss of eastern hemlock trees due to HWA has had major impacts to the ecosystem of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, including altered forest composition, loss of wildlife habitat, and even a negative effect on aquatic communities. In this webinar, Dr. Robert Jetton will discuss HWA biology, management, and give an update on this pest in the southeastern U.S.
