This webinar provides a comprehensive view of NRCS pest management policy, the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) conservation practice standard, and a demonstration of WIN-PST to assess hazards associated with chemical pest activities.
Note: The policy discussion in this webinar is still relevant; however, the discussion of the practice standard and associated technical note, along with some of the Q&A, was speculative at the time of presentation. Check the current national and your state practice standard for up to date guidance.
NRCS roles in pest management identified in policy are: evaluating risks associated with pest suppression strategies; providing assistance to mitigate environmental risks of pest suppression strategies; assisting clients in the adoption of IPM techniques that protect natural resources; and assisting clients to inventory, assess, and suppress noxious weeds on non-cropland and to provide assistance to suppress weeds to ensure successful implementation and/or maintenance of vegetative conservation practices. This webinar discusses specific pest management activities that are permissible in these roles and activities that are prohibited. Conservation practices related to NRCS's roles in pest management are presented, and Integrated Pest Management as the principal conservation practice related to NRCS pest management roles is thoroughly discussed. WIN-PST, an approved tool for assessing the hazards of chemical pest suppression activities, is demonstrated, and Agronomy Technical Note 5 is presented as guidance for mitigation planning of pest suppression activities.
This webinar is sponsored by the USDA NRCS East National Technology Support Center.
