The Westervelt Company’s Sustainability and Government Relations team will share insights into how a private land management company is navigating the realm of carbon in today’s markets and socio-political climate. Westervelt is proud to be a leader in an industry that provides nature-based climate solutions and will discuss how they promote this facet of their business to policymakers, environmental organizations, and the general public. They will discuss some of their internal efforts in greenhouse gas accounting and available carbon accounting tools as well as emerging technologies in which they are engaged. They will discuss leveraging legislation and where policymakers can increase nature-based climate solutions to have tangible impacts on climate change.

Sam Blumenfeld serves as Westervelt’s Sustainability & Policy Analyst. In the carbon realm, he works on accounting for Westervelt’s carbon budget throughout their domestic operations as well as engaging with emerging carbon technologies, and how to strategically include carbon awareness and reduction initiatives in business operations. Sam received both his BS and MS in Natural Resources from North Carolina State University and completed his master’s thesis on developing economic tools for the Western North Carolina Christmas tree industry and NC Extension agents. He is a “weekend botanist” and enjoys exploring the diverse flora of the Southeastern United States.

 

Jonathan Lowery
Corporate Sustainability and Government Relations Director

Jonathan Lowery has over 26 years of experience as a natural resources professional. He is a Registered Forester in the state of Alabama and has worked for The Westervelt Company since receiving B.S. and M.S. degrees in forestry from Mississippi State University. He has worked in various functions of managing Westervelt’s forest assets, including timber inventory, silviculture, hardwood management, harvest scheduling, land acquisition, and forest certification. In his current role, Jonathan works across all business units to promote Westervelt’s sustainability story, develop and enhance sustainability-related business opportunities, and advocate for public policies that maintain and improve the economic, environmental, and social values of working forests, wood products, and ecological restoration.
