View "Managing Cover Crops for Nutrient Management - A Farmer's Perspective," presented by a farmer with over 30 years of experience using cover crops, overcoming challenges, and making it work on his farm, to increase your practical understanding and ability to promote the use of cover crops.

Ohio farmer Dave Brandt provides insight on how he makes cover crops work on his 900 acre farm. With over 30 years experience using no-till and cover crops, Dave has learned secrets to success with all of the traditional cover crops, such as rye and wheat, along with a wide variety of newer plants, including tillage radishes, sunn hemp, and Phacelia. Precision seeding using a split row planter (15” rows) allows Dave to reduce seeding rates and has been instrumental to his success. Using a combination of Austrian winter pea and tillage radish, along with an in-season nitrogen measurement tool, Dave has all the nitrogen he needs to maintain his high corn yields. Soil health continues to improve through this cropping system with organic matter over 5% and bulk density below 1.43 g/cc. Applying soil health management systems, including the use of cover crops, all ends with what farmers do to manage their land.
