This is the first lecture in a three-part series by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. This series will look at quail population decline in Texas, what efforts are being made to aid in restoration, as well as discuss some monitoring methods.
Bobwhite quail are an iconic species of the south that have suffered tremendous losses across their range over the past few decades. Population trends mirror those of several species of grassland birds that share similar habitat. Texas is one of the few states which still have huntable populations of both Bobwhite and Scaled quail. For this reason, quail are an important upland game bird in Texas as many rural economies depend on the revenue from hunters. The decline in population numbers over the last several decades is troublesome, but a new effort between Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department seeks to change that.
The Reversing the Quail Decline Initiative has funded research projects on quail biology and habitat management to improve quail populations. Another major component of the Initiative is the education of land managers, biologists and hunters during Field Days and Short Courses and by utilizing social media and YouTube videos.
