Forest fragmentation happens every time a piece of land is split or divided, making it more challenging to implement traditional forest management practices. This presentation will focus on how small woodlot owners can overcome some of those management challenges and the forest management stand improvement practices that any landowner can do, even on a very small scale.

Mark is an N.C. State University forest management graduate, who worked for the Forest Nutrition Cooperative at the university for two before beginning a career with the N.C. Forest Service working throughout the state in many different positions. Mark retired two years ago and now works as a private consulting forester. He is involved with the N.C. Tree Farm Program, Quail Forever, the Sandhills Prescribed Burn Association and several other organizations focusing his work on forest management, wildlife habitat improvement, urban forestry, ecosystem restoration and conservation.

Mark is a founding board member and current chair of the Working Lands Trust, which focuses on maintaining sustainable food, fiber and community. Mark served from 2021 to 2024 as executive director of the National Woodland Owners Association and now serves as the organizations policy consultant monitoring policy, regulation and lawmaking processes on the national scale as they impact members, private landowners and partner operations.
