Soil is alive with billions of microorganisms and most have an important and beneficial role to play in a healthy soil ecosystem. Some are not so beneficial and can bring about disease and damage to our crops. In a healthy soil ecosystem, the beneficial organisms provide competition and balance the populations of pathogenic biota. This biological ecosystem is very fragile and is greatly affected by weather, habitat, and outside influences. The way we manage soil can have a great effect on the soil ecosystem and potentially give rise to pathogenic populations. Likewise, our management choices can provide a habitat that is positive for a balanced ecosystem and offer a more resilient environment for the beneficial organisms. This webinar will help participants understand how improving soil health and managing the soil habitat for beneficial microbes can reduce reliance on agrichemical inputs, including those that might have unintended environmental consequences. It will explore mechanisms that regulate plant-soil-microbial interactions and how these interactions can be used to develop strategies that help growers improve productivity and sustainability.
This webinar is presented by the USDA NRCS Soil Health Division.
