Pollinator species play a vital ecological and economic role in the southeastern United States. Native and non-native bees support forests and agriculture by pollinating trees and crops, and they also create valuable products such as honey and beeswax. However, the detection of the yellow-legged hornet (Vespa velutina) in Georgia in 2023 poses a serious threat to these pollinator communities. This predatory species feeds on a wide range of insects and has already contributed to declines in local beehive populations. But what do we know about this invasive pest and how can it be managed? In this webinar, Ben Powell will discuss the biology of the yellow-legged hornet and its potential impacts.
