In the last couple of years, the potential of drones for forest ecosystem research has been studied and tested in a multitude of applications. With the widespread use of high-precision sensors and accompanying software in forestry, it is possible to obtain accurate data in a short time that replaces long-term manpower in the field with equal or in some cases, such as windthrow calculation or wildlife counting, greater accuracy. This webinar will cover the basics of UAS operations and applications with particular attention to the potential to support a host of natural resource management activities, including forest health protection, wildfire suppression, research, recreational impacts, and law enforcement.

JustyneJeziorskaDr. Justyna Jeziorska is a Research Associate in the Center for Geospatial Analytics at NC State University and a UAS Mapping Scientist certified by the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. She has processed countless UAS-obtained datasets and teaches NC State students how to use drones in their research. Dr. Jeziorska will present her expertise in Unmanned Aerial Systems (drones). She will explain not only how drones work, but will also emphasize the importance of developing sensors that are designed to be used with UAS, a flight programming software, and UAS collected data processing software. Dr. Jeziorska will summarize the results of forest-related research conducted with the use of drones.
