Learn key performance parameters for poultry ventilation systems to meet airflow and energy performance targets; and, understand the steps to evaluate, design, and install equipment so that producers can protect flock health and control energy costs.

Energy Conservation Opportunities (ECO) in farming operations are numerous and varied. The process to identify, design, and properly install any ECO has typical characteristics. This webinar will focus on ventilation systems in broiler operations but the underlying process can be broadly applied.

Mechanical ventilation typically accounts for about half of the energy used in a broiler house. Fan systems top the list for electricity demand. While electricity use for ventilation is significant every month, summer use generally accounts for 60% or more of the annual total. While many producers have installed energy-efficient ventilation many more lower-efficiency systems remain. And many integrators want more air flow to achieve higher air speeds. We will study a broiler farm in South Carolina to answer the following questions.

  • How can I determine if a fan really needs to be replaced for a more efficient model?
  • What are the most important things to look for in selecting a high-quality fan?
  • How do differences in air flow, efficiency, and steepness of the fan curve impact performance and efficiency?
  • When do energy efficient fans really pay for themselves?
  • How do I evaluate a particular set of fans to determine if they will meet the projected performance and energy savings provided by a designer?

The principles and results will be developed in terms of particular situations common on broiler farms. Much of what we will cover applies to other agricultural facilities (e.g., swine facilities or greenhouses).

The cases for this webinar are from NRCS-funded projects through a Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) Project: Improving Energy Efficiency in South Carolina Animal Facilities and Greenhouses: A Partnership for Education, Outreach, and Technology Adoption.
