Third in a series of 5 webinars, from January through May 2015, sponsored by NC Forest Service, Community and Urban Forestry Program. This webinar focuses on the urban interface in the context of wildfire risk and proper planning.
Continued development, increases in populations living in and around forests, weather conditions such as drought, and natural tree mortality... these factors increase both urban and rural wildfire potential. Communities with greater awareness of fire risks, and those that exercise careful planning, can ensure safe and enjoyable living in and around natural areas. The Firewise Community program fosters collaboration to encourage and acknowledge community-level efforts to address fire problems in the wildland/urban interface. Key questions to start the conversation include:
- What is the "urban-rural interface" or "interface" and what must be considered when building in these areas?
- What resources are available to increase awareness and planning, for the general public as well as community officials?
- Who are our potential partners already focused on the interface?
- How to Become a Firewise Community
Webinar Guest Presenter: Fred X. Turck is Assistant Director Resource Protection, Virginia Division of Forestry located in Charlottesville, VA. Fred is an active participant in the Firewise Communities/USA program which encourages and acknowledges action that minimizes home loss to wildfire by preparing for a fire before it occurs. He has assisted in the preparation of Community Wildfire Protection Plans in Virginia. Fred is also a leader in the Certified Prescribed Burn Managers Program which trains people to conduct responsible and safe planned burning in an effort to lower the risk of wildfire hazards.
